Here I am making Portuguese fillozesI’m full Portuguese, with all my family coming from the Azores islands. We recently made a trip to the Azores islands with our family to explore our great great great grandparents homestead and meet relatives. I’ll be sharing more recipes for you to follow in future posts!

Portuguese doughnuts, called “fillozes” are a favorite that my grandmother and great grandmother would make around Eastertime. Today, my family enjoys them year round. Be careful; they’re addictive!

FILLOZES (Portuguese Doughnuts)

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 1 cube butter
  • 3 tbsp. sugar (plus more to dust finished Fillozes)
  • 9 eggs

Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup lukewarm water. Beat eggs well, add sugar, beat well, then add dissolved yeast. Mix all with 3 cups flour and work together until it forms a soft dough, beating well. Melt butter and let cool to lukewarm. Then pour into dough, work together well, cover with tea towel and set in warm place to rise until double in size.

Heat 1 cup or more of oil to boiling point on low fire. Put milk in saucer, dip hands in milk. Take dough (1 tbsp) in hand – keep stretching until it’s round and medium thin. Drop piece into oil, turning as needed with a fork to brown on both sides. Coat each one in sugar while still warm. Enjoy!
