“Mardie, your chances of success are one in a million,” my adoption attorney warned me. However, my goal was always to become a Mommy. I thought of everything we had already invested, questioned how much more we could go through, and still, I couldn’t deny that God had a plan. Believe me, I didn’t want to hire seven attorneys, but I didn’t want to lose my son, either. Money was scarce at the time, and we had to make some hard decisions. We sold jewelry, personal items, and our home just to pay the adoption expenses.
My journey to motherhood included a very trying adoption experience which lasted over two years. In addition to the seven attorneys, I was working with two different states, located on opposite sides of the country. My son’s birth parents changed their minds—not once, but twice!
I had no idea how this adoption was going to turn out, but I believed that the Lord wanted us to adopt this child. I knew that He would provide a way, and He did! I trusted the Lord. When I was scared or fearful, I prayed, and He comforted me and guided me with scripture. It was a difficult journey, emotionally, physically, financially, and psychologically.
It took us 18 months to finalize our adoption, but today I can confirm that it was worth everything we went through! I believe my adoption was successful because of many factors, including open communication, kindness, calmness, and faith, all provided by my Heavenly Father. I never allowed anger or resentment to enter into my adoption process. I believed, acted in faith, trusted in Him, and was blessed, just as He promised through my journey to parenthood.
Looking back, I can see that my adoption was preparing me for the work I do today, the work I began in 1986 in my living room. The Lord was truly at work in my life, and I am blessed beyond measure to have been called to a role doing His work through the miracle of Christian Adoption.
My adoption journey story shared here was excerpted from my most recent adoption book, Called to Adoption.
